Definition

This part-time, grant-funded position will work in our Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program at Columbus Public Health. Under the general direction of the Dietitian Supervisor, this position, is responsible for performing professional dietetic work such as nutritional assessment, nutrition counseling, and breastfeeding counseling for the WIC Program at Columbus Public Health.

This position can be filled with either a Dietetic Technician or a Dietitian.


Under the general supervision of a licensed dietitian, assists in providing comprehensive nutritional services to program participants; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Provides comprehensive information regarding the program to potential and enrolled program participants;
Performs nutritional assessment of participants by assessing height/weight, hemoglobin, and diet history;
Provides information to program participants regarding appropriate nutritional intake and encourages compliance with nutritional recommendations;
Determines the appropriate food package based on such information as participants' diet history and nutritional assessment;
Promotes breastfeeding through information, education, and support;
Prepares self-education modules and plans, organizes, and conducts nutritional education programs or classes for participants under direction of the dietitian;
Revises information pamphlets/materials and keeps an inventory of supplies;
Attends in-service training in order to keep abreast of changes in the field of nutrition/dietetics;
Disseminates printed material to various outreach/community service agencies in order to increase community awareness of WIC;
Refers program participants to various community agencies for nutritional/health care;
Plans menus based on established guidelines;
Guides individuals in food selection, preparation, and menu planning based upon nutritional needs;
Schedules client appointments; reschedules missed appointments;
Maintains accurate client records;
May perform the duties of an Office Assistant II within a WIC clinic as necessary;
May participate in breastfeeding committees and attend related meetings;
May communicate with potential and enrolled program participants who have limited English language skills.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of valid registration as a Dietetic Technician with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Substitution(s): Possession of a Verification Statement indicating completion of the requirements of a dietetics program approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. If the substitution is applied, possession of valid registration as a Dietetic Technician with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics must be obtained upon completion of the probationary period.

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

Positions allocated to this classification may require conversational proficiency in a language or languages other than English.
