In our Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D) department, we understand the importance of managing the demands of both home and work life. We have an open position for a Principal Packaging Engineer based in our Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D) department. This role will support the entire PT&D product and packaging portfolio. PT&D is the bridge, which turns brilliant science into actual medicines that help millions of people. We work across the entire value chain, designing and delivering active ingredients, formulations, and devices required to support new medicines – from supplies for use in early toxicology studies and clinical trials to developing the technology to ensure drugs can be scaled up for commercial manufacture.

What you’ll do

We will rely on you to bring leadership in packaging development across our commercial product portfolio. Your subject matter expertise supports input for pharmaceutics, analytical sciences, validation science knowledge management, product robustness, analytics, process engineering, and technology enablement. Working as the technical leader in our packaging development team, you will work closely with our packing partners in commercial operations, focusing on sustainability, design methodology, and standardisation. In addition, you will help drive delivery of our packaging strategy in a diverse, multi-skilled environment. Key responsibilities include:

  • Manage packaging support to our commercial product portfolio, applying specialist knowledge and expertise to achieve project targets in a timely fashion and to agreed quality standards

  • Lead cross-functional packaging projects across AstraZeneca and partner organizations and being the point of contact to technically assess proposed pack changes and influence decision making.

  • Ensure that work is performed in accordance with appropriate safety (SHE), quality and compliance standards, e.g. GMP, and being able to understand and interpret packaging regulations.

  • Generate and reviewing regulatory submission documents, plans, protocols and reports ensuring that the project objectives are met

  • Apply your technical expertise to support product supply strategy in sourcing, asset transfers, capacity expansion, and manage the packaging product lifecycle with lean and six sigma methodologies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Minimum of 10 years packaging experience

  • Expert understanding of the principles and concepts in relation to packaging

  • Led multi-functional teams across a global platform

  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment under GMP or a regulatory framework.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science with a minimum of 7 years experience, or Ph.D. with a minimum of 5 years experience) in commercial manufacturing and/or development environment.

  • A recognized leader with direct experience and project management in an array of packaging aspects in one or more of the following: materials and polymer science, design methodology, sustainability, pharmaceutical packaging regulations and testing requirements, qualification and validation of new materials, and product technical transfer.

  • Expert understanding of the principles and concepts in relation to pharmaceutical packaging

  • Certified in lean and/or six sigma methodologies
